Chromatic Mysteries: Ancient Chinese Chime Bell Scales on a Single String

Presented by Dr. Guangming Li, Professor of Ethnomusicology, UCLA
In 1978, a 65-piece set of bronze bells was unearthed in Hubei province that revealed many marvels, one of which is their ability to produce a complete chromatic scale—a first for its time. Dr. Li will demonstrate one possible method that would accomplish this feat using a monochord similar to the jun, a tuning apparatus noted by ancient court musicians.
