The February book selection, Into the Silence: The Great War, Mallory and the Conquest of Everest is written by Wade Davis, Guest Curator for the upcoming exhibit, Everest: Ascent to Glory. Mr. Davis, author of 22 books, anthropologist and explorer-in-residence for National Geographic, spent over a decade conducting research and interviews to write this epic mountaineering story. The book begins with the British survivors of World War One’s trenches who then go on to explore, climb and conquer Everest during three expeditions from 1921-1924. Wade writes that Everest signified “a sentinel in the sky, a place and destination of hope and redemption, a symbol of continuity in a world gone mad.”
Winner of the Baillie Gifford Prize and the Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction in 2012, this book recounts the physical and geographic challenges and mental fortitude involved when these remarkable men climb the world’s highest mountain. 655 pages, illustrated, published in 2011
Docent led tour of the exhibit, Everest: Ascent to Glory, follows each discussion.

In an attempt to protect staff and visitors against the spread of COVID-19, our updated policy will now require ticket holders to provide proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 to attend all indoor events through at least the end of February and until further notice. “Fully vaccinated” means the event you will attend is at least 14 days after your final vaccine dose. To enter the event, please bring a photo ID (for guests over 18 years old) and proof of vaccination, either your physical vaccination card, a picture of your vaccination card, or a digital vaccination record. Most California residents may request a digital vaccination record at myvaccinerecord.cdph.ca.gov
Any ticket holders (including those under age 12) without proof of being fully vaccinated can present a negative COVID-19 test (PCR taken within 48 hours or antigen taken within 6 hours) of the event. Along with their ticket, attendees will need to bring either documentation of a negative COVID-19 test result, emailed result, or picture of results showing a negative diagnosis as well as the date and their name. At-home tests will not be accepted.
Masks (over the mouth and nose) are required at all times for all ticket holders (ages 2 and up) regardless of vaccination status in all indoor spaces. Disposable 3-ply surgical masks, N95, KN95, or KF94 masks are recommended.
Ticket holders who do not comply with these policies will not be admitted. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
