Selena: Breaking Gender Barriers with Dr. Gloria Arjona
Talks
In this multimedia lecture, Dr. Gloria Arjona explores race, gender, and the history and music of Texas through the lens of iconic singer Selena Quintanilla. Selena broke many barriers: first, as leader of Selena y los Dinos, she expanded traditional Tejano music, by adding non-traditional instruments and other music genres, including cumbia, pop, rock, and disco. At the same time, Selena broke gender barriers, succeeding in a highly male-dominated cultural atmosphere, and achieving at a young age what no other Tejano singer — male or female— did before her.
