Books at Bowers: Touring Through the Pages is a Bowers Docent Guild sponsored book club that pairs a topical book with a museum art experience.

The classic novel. The Big Sleep, by author Raymond Chandler featuring Private Investigator Philip Marlowe is the first in its series. Published in 1939 this crime novel has been voted #62 of the best 100 novels of the century and nominee for several awards including Best Ever Crime Novel. A dying millionaire hires Marlowe to investigate the blackmail of one of his daughters, with murder, kidnapping, extortion and seduction included in this period piece. The complicated plot, gripping read, vivid descriptions and sharp dialogue of the novel center on Los Angeles and California in the 1930’s. The 1946 movie version with Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall is a classic film noir. 231 pages, paperback, copyright 1939.

A docent led tour of the new California Watercolors exhibit, which features locales in Los Angeles and California, will follow the book discussion.
