Waleed el-Hawatky is an Egyptologist and musicologist with an M.A. in Egyptology and Coptology from The American University in Cairo. A California native born to Egyptian immigrants, he brings an interdisciplinary background in genetics, public relations, and nearly three decades as a composer, performer, and recording artist. His research focuses on ancient Egyptian musicology and the role of music in understanding daily life, ritual, and culture in ancient Egypt.

Drawing on evidence from tombs, temples, texts, instruments, and other archaeological finds, this presentation explores the evolving role of music at the royal court and throughout society. By combining Egyptological and musicological perspectives, el-Hawatky examines how musical innovation reflected—and may have been influenced by—the ideals of Aten worship during one of ancient Egypt’s most transformative eras.
