SATURDAY | MARCH 8 | 1:30 – 3:30 PM
NORMA KERSHAW AUDITORIUM | LECTURE
Presented by Dr. Solange Ashby, Assistant Professor of Egyptology and Nubian Studies at the University of California Los Angeles.
Explore the dynamic religious and cultural shifts of northern Nubia in Late Antiquity. This fascinating presentation examines the region’s transition to Christianity through archaeological and textual evidence from two key sites—Qasr Ibrim and Kalabsha. Discover how the royal inscriptions of the polytheistic Blemmye king Kharamadoye and the Christian Nubian king Silko, both etched onto the facade of Kalabsha’s Egyptian temple, reveal a crossroads of faith and power. Drawing from Greek, Meroitic, and Coptic sources, as well as the material remains of late Isis shrines, this talk sheds light on Nubia’s diverse population and its complex blend of religions, languages, and traditions during this pivotal era.
