May 14 | The Embrace of Culture: The World’s Columbian Exposition and the Art Institute of Chicago
In 1893, the World's Columbian Exposition came to Chicago, changing the city forever. Daniel Burnham’s "White City," with its Neo-Classical buildings, inspired cultural aspirations beyond anyone’s expectations, laying the groundwork for institutions like the Art Institute of Chicago. We will discuss the emergence of several significant patrons who helped create this “Paris on the Prairie.”
May 21 | Chicago in the 20th Century: From the Prairie School to the Second School
Chicago remained a hotbed of architectural innovation well into the 20th century. Architect Frank Lloyd Wright sought to develop a distinctly American style, culminating in the Prairie School movement, which took root in Chicago. Later in the century, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe arrived from the Bauhaus, bringing European Modernist ideas that helped catalyze the Second Chicago School of Architecture.
