Beaded Magic from Island Southeast Asia with Martha Bluming and Mark Johnson
SATURDAY | FEBURARY 28
11 AM – 12:30 PM | NORMA KERSHAW AUDITORIUM | LECTURE
In “Beaded Magic from Island Southeast Asia” Martha Bluming will explore the origin and dispersal of Indo-Pacific glass beads across what has become known as the Maritime Silk Route. Through centuries of trade, the annual monsoon winds brought traders carrying these tiny magical objects from India to western China and across the Pacific to the islands of the Philippines and Indonesia, where they became cultural identifiers and magical connectors to the realm of the ancestors. Following her talk, Mark Johnson will present examples of the famous beaded textiles of the region and will offer the opportunity for members of the audience to experience the intricate weaving and beading techniques that have made them so famous throughout the world of tribal art collectors.
