The Landscape of the Assyrian Heartland with Dr. Jason Ur
SATURDAY | APRIL 11 | 1:30 – 2:30 PM
NORMA KERSHAW AUDITORIUM | DISTINGUISHED LECTURE

Dr. Jason Ur studies the Neo-Assyrian empire (ca. 900–612 BCE), which dominated much of the ancient Middle East from its heartland along the Tigris River, in today’s northern Iraq and Kurdistan Region. Its kings celebrated conquest, deporting millions of captives, as recorded in inscriptions and reflected in biblical texts. Since 2012, a Harvard-led project has traced these deportees and the empire’s landscape footprint using field survey, declassified spy satellite imagery, and drones—showing that Assyrian imperial influence was vast, transformative, but surprisingly short-lived, and leaving traces that can still be detected nearly 3,000 years later.

This lecture is part of the Archaeology of the Biblical Lands Distinguished Lecture Series, made possible through a generous bequest by Norma Kershaw (1924-2020).
