Presented by Dr. Eugene Y. Wang, the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Professor of Asian Art in the Department of History of Art and Architecture at Harvard University

The bronze chariots uncovered from the west side of the First Emperor’s (259-210 BCE) tomb are believed to be his spirit vehicles. As such, they are expected to ferry his postmortem spirit to heaven. However, mysteries abound about these bronze artifacts. They stand in a curious relationship to the Terracotta Warriors one mile east of the tomb. Whereas the east-facing warriors are life-size, the chariots, facing west, are half-life-size. Are they in sync with each other? If there is a single master blueprint governing the First Emperor’s tomb complex, what would it be?
