In this presentation, Dr. Patricia Butz explores a fascinating cross-cultural connection between ancient Egypt and Greece through their shared use of grids and gridded texts. Focusing on the Greek term stoikhedon, which describes the grid-like arrangement of alphabetic inscriptions from the late 6th century BCE onward, she argues that this practice reflects not merely a static visual system but a dynamic concept influenced by Egyptian grid use. In Egypt, grids were integral to garden planning and water distribution, as seen in tomb paintings from the Old Kingdom and supported by the 2017 discovery of a gridded funerary garden at Luxor by Dr. José Galán. Dr. Butz highlights how modular units (stoikoi) in Egyptian agriculture parallel the rare literary reference to stoikhedon on the bilingual Stele of Moschion, where letterforms move across magical grids in ways that evoke the flow of water through cultivated spaces.
