SATURDAY | MAY 10 | 1:30 – 3 PM
NORMA KERSHAW AUDITORIUM | DISTINGUISHED LECTURE & BOOK SIGNING
Presented by Dr. William Schniedewind, Professor of Biblical Studies at UCLA, and the Sady and Ludwig Kahn Director of the Alan D. Leve Center for Jewish Studies
Who really wrote the Bible? Its books have no bylines. Tradition has long identified Moses as the author of the Pentateuch, with Ezra as editor. Ancient readers suggested that David wrote the psalms and Solomon wrote Proverbs, but the Hebrew Bible rarely speaks of its authors. This lecture offers a bold new answer: the Bible was not written by a single author, or by a series of single authors, but by professional communities that used writing including “the sons of prophets”, peripheral and central priests, the military, and government bureaucrats. Drawing on ancient inscriptions, archaeology, and anthropology, as well as a close reading of the biblical text itself, this lecture traces the communal origin of biblical literature.
Who Really wrote the Bible: the Story of the Scribes will be available for purchase and a book signing will follow the lecture.
This event is part of the Archaeology of the Biblical Lands Distinguished Lecture Series, made possible through a generous bequest by Norma Kershaw (1924-2020).
Ticketed Event: Members $15 | General $20
