An optional docent led tour will follow the book discussion. All book selections are available for purchase in the museum’s gallery store.

Book: Two Years Before the Mast by Richard Henry Dana, which will be paired with the exhibition Arthur Beaumont: Art of the Sea

This memoir traces Richard Henry Dana’s life as a seaman on the ocean voyage from Boston around Cape Horn to California in the late 1830s. This tale of adventure vividly describes storms, whales, a mad ship captain, hardship, and an intriguing portrait of California’s coast before the gold rush. First published in 1840, “this book has influenced generations of readers and writers and remains a mainstay on American reading lists.” –Smithsonian
