The temple of pharaoh Seti I at Abydos is one of the most fascinating monuments from Ancient Egypt. Its sanctuary for the god Osiris preserves unique imagery related to rituals of magically reviving the god after his gruesome death and dismemberment. Yet the temple was only part of a larger monumental complex planned on this spot of the desert edge at Abydos. Buried in the sand behind the temple, there is the Osireion. This enigmatic structure consists of passages leading to an underground chamber surrounded by a constantly renewing source of water. This talk will introduce the questions surrounding the Osireion, present a history of its discovery and study, and offer a plausible answer to the question of why it was built. One possible interpretation is that the structure was designed to perform a specific ritual that magically allowed Osiris’s body to be recycled in the waters of the Nun.

About the speaker: 

Bryan Kraemer is an Egyptologist working at RAFFMA, where he is developing content related to the museum’s collections of artifacts from Ancient Egypt. He has a Master's in Egyptology and a Master's in Archaeological Computing and is working on finishing his Ph.D. in Egyptology at the University of Chicago. Bryan’s research interests are in Ancient Egyptian religion and ritual, Ancient Egypt and the Classical World, Ancient Egyptian language, art, and archaeology, digital humanities, GIS, and digital frontiers in museums. Bryan is currently working on a monograph on his research on the festivals of Osiris at Abydos and a 3D archaeological atlas of maps from his research as co-director of the Wadi el-Hudi Expedition (www.wadielhudi.com).
