Presented by Alfred Haft (Ph.D.), curator of Japanese art in the Department of Asia at the British Museum
This presentation explores how the Museum’s Hokusai collection developed during the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, concentrating on six men who laid the foundations for the Museum’s current strong holdings of the artist’s work: William Anderson (1842–1900); Augustus Wollaston Franks (1826–1897), Arthur Morrison (1863–1945), Charles Hazelwood Shannon (1863–1937), Laurence Binyon (1869–1943) and Jack Hillier (1912–1995). This history serves as a reminder of Hokusai’s timeless, global appeal, and the role that collectors and museums have in securing the legacies of the world’s great artists for future generations.
