We’ll discuss the transition from Colonial America to the newly formed United States and examine the work of John Singleton Copley, Benjamin West, and John Vanderlyn among others. We’ll talk about how racial identities and stereotypes were formed through painting. We’ll also look at presidential portraits and examine the response of contemporary artists such as Titus Kaphar and others to these historical works.
