MAY 1 | The Landscape and National Identity
We’ll examine the impact of Manifest Destiny on Westward expansion and look at the emergence of landscape painting as a way of forming national identity. We’ll discuss the Hudson River School with particular emphasis on the lesser-known female artists such as Susie Barstow, Harriet Cany Peale, Sarah Cole and African-American painter Robert S. Duncanson. Will also look at how these works are presented in a 21st context.
