This series will primarily focus on women who have contributed to the arts in the 20th century in a variety of ways as artists, dealers, collectors, businesswomen, and advocates.
JANUARY 17 | Julia Morgan: California’s Architect
The presentation will look at Julia Morgan’s architectural achievements and her connection with the great patron Phoebe Apperson Hearst.
JANUARY 24 | Peggy Guggenheim: Art Dealer Extraordinaire
The exploration will cover Peggy Guggenheim’s development of the New York-based Art of This Century gallery, where she built an extraordinary community of European émigrés and young American artists.
JANUARY 31 |*11:15 AM | Woman of Surrealism: Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varo
The discussion will consider the Surrealist movement through the parallel lives of two of the most compelling women Surrealists: Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varo.
FEBRUARY 7 | Designing America: Florence Schust Knoll & Ray Kaiser Eames
The careers of Florence Schust Knoll & Ray Kaiser Eames as designers and businesswomen will be considered, along with the development of the look of Corporate America design in the 1950s and 1960s.
FEBRUARY 14 | Niki de St Phalle: Pain and Provocation
Niki de St Phalle’s feminist art practice offers an interesting insight into her very personal art that lies outside of the American canon. Her life story and strive for creative independence will be explored.
FEBRUARY 21 | Women in Photography and the work of Annie Leibovitz
The lecture will focus on the unique contribution of Annie Leibovitz in celebrity portraiture.
