Books at Bowers: The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon

RSVP

SATURDAY | AUGUST 17 | 10:30 – 11:30 AM | Fluor Gallery | Onsite Book Discussion & Tour

For Bowers Members only: A Book Club experience

The August Book Club selection is Michael Chabon’s 2001 Pulitzer Prize winning epic novel, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay. (Copyright 2000, 656 pages.) The story of two cousins, Kavalier from Prague and the Clay from Brooklyn, who create a successful comic book hero, covers the years from the 1939 -1950’s during the Golden Age of comics, World War II, The World’s Fair, and more. Several of the actual Golden Age comic book artists and creators Chabon interviewed to research the novel make appearances as characters–even Salvador Dali and Eleanor Roosevelt make a cameo appearance! Chabon takes every historical detail he can and weaves a rich tapestry with “the kind of charged prose that leaps six hundred pages of fantasy and social history in a single bound…” (Time) “Chabon’s highly propelled, magnificently furnished, linguistically unbuttoned and joyfully melancholy tale …is not merely hypnotically compelling but, even better, fall-on-the-floor-funny-but-with-a-lump-in-your-throat.” (Memphis Commercial Appeal)

Following the discussion, a specialty tour of Asian Comics and Ancient Arts of China will highlight similarities and connections between specific objects in both exhibits with a short presentation on the history and influence of American comics.

Free for Bowers Members. RSVP on Bowers.org. Space is limited to 30 Bowers Members per discussion. A confirmation email will be sent to participants prior to the event.
