Books at Bowers: The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye by Sonny Liew

MEMBER RSVP

THURSDAY | APRIL 18 | 1 – 2 PM | Norma Kershaw Auditorium | Onsite Book Discussion & Tour

For members only: A Book Club experience

“Books at Bowers: Touring Through the Pages” is a Bowers Docent Guild sponsored book club that pairs a topical book with a museum art experience.

Sonny Liew's graphic novel, The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye, has garnered numerous accolades, notably receiving three Eisner awards among its many distinctions. The book’s simple premise is the biography of a fictional comic book artist whose 80-year span of comics illustrates the often-turbulent history of Singapore. “Liew’s inclusion of fabricated newspaper clippings, old sketches, mixed media works, and even an occasional photo collage purporting to show us first-hand evidence of Charlie’s life, is riveting.

320 pages. Limited copies of the book are available for purchase in the Gallery Store.

Following the discussion in the museum auditorium, a Docent led tour of Asian Comics: Evolution of An Art Form will highlight how powerful comics can be as a medium.

Free for Bowers Members. RSVP on Bowers.org. Space is limited to 30 Bowers Members per discussion. A confirmation email will be sent to participants prior to the event.
